The Bergerac Appellations

The Beregerac political region and hence its appellations were separated from Bordeaux in 1936. Thereafter, this high-quality region started to market itself, post-war.

The Bergerac red wines are a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, sometimes supplemented by Côt or, less commonly, by Fer Servadouu or Mérillee. They are often dark in color, with full-bodied flavours.

The Bergerac white wines are mainly a blend of Sémillon with Sauvignon blanc, Sauvignon gris and Muscadelle, to which Ugni blanc, Ondenc and Chenin blanc are sometimes added. These combinations lead to the creation of fruity, dry white wines that can be powerful, and of medium-sweet or sweet wines that are aromatic and powerful.

The Appellations

Bergerac AOC
Red wines
From the assembly of traditional Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot varieties, Bergerac reds are characterized by their flexibility, fruity and elegance. Flattering to the palate, they are generally drunk young but can develop a beautiful generosity in aging.
White wines
Nervous and fruity in the mouth, to be drunk while young, round with a complexity revealed by the wood in which they are kept. The Bergerac whites are distiguished by a floral and subtle nose, made from Sauvignon, Semillon and Muscadelle varieties.
Rosé wines
Among the most applauded of summer wines, made from the same red wine varieties, Bergerac rosés offer grilled dishes and crisp salads a complementary summer suppleness and fruity aromas.

Côtes de Bergerac AOC
Red wines
The grape varieties are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot, producing mellow, soft red wines that can be stored. They reach their prime after several years storage in the wine cellar.
White wines
The Côtes de Bergerac white wines. made from the Semillon grap, have a soft bright straw color, creating a rounded palate and aromatic freshness. They are better appreciated in their full youth, although can be drunk young.

Côtes de Duras AOC
Red wines - Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cot
Usually supple and fruity, but some batches, in particular those that have been aged in oak casks, can be more robust. They are produced by a long maceration process.
White wines - Sauvignon blanc, Sémillon, Muscadelle, Mauzac, Rouchelein or Chenin blanc and Ondenc
These wines are characterized by their Sauvignon-like nose and vigorous flavours.

Côtes de Montravel AOC

Montravel is the appellation for the dry red and white wines of the Lamothe-Montravel parish, in the far west of the Bergerac. The Cote de Montravel wines are semi-sweet wines (moelleux). The grapes blended are the Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle varieties.

Haut-Montravel AOC

Monbazillac AOC
White dessert wines that can be stored for a long time. From the attractive château on a hill overlooking the town of Bergerac, the world-famous sweet white wine of Monbazillac develops from the grape's noble rot and hand-picked harvesting to ensure the full flavour and quality of this attractive golden-coloured wine.
Monbazillac is blended from three grape varieties, Sémillon, Sauvignon and The wine has a fabulous colour which deepens over time. It is an extremely elegant wine with dominant overtones of honey, acacia and peaches and hints of citrus fruits and crystallised ‘Mirabelle’ plums.

Montravel AOC
Red wines
Since 2001 these red wines have distinguished themselves with sumptuous taste reflecting the very demanding growing conditions. Excellent wines to keep, Montravel red wines must be blended exclusively from the following grape varieties: Merlot (at least 50%), and Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc or Malbec.
Dry white wines
Predominantly sauvignon grape, with Semillon and Muscadeller grapes also cultivated. producing the excellent, dry, white Montravel wines. Aromas of white flowers, these wines

Pécharmant AOC
Red wines
The taste of Pécharmant portrays its soil - sandy and gravel of Périgord, with a deep layer of iron-rich clay called "Tran". Composed of Caberner Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Black Merlot grapes, Pécharmant is a wine with powerful charm, and aromatic intensity. Pécharmant is more robust than many other wines produced in the area, both in terms of ageing capabilities and flavour profile. Merlot is the predominant grape, which means that the wines are softer and less tannic than those produced from a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Pécharmant wines come from the south-facing gravelly slopes just to the east of Bergerac town.

Rosette AOC
White wines
With light straw colour, Rosette wines reveal a large distinction. Very balanced, soft and round, this uniquely sweet wine is a delicate companion to appetizers and entrées. Rosette AOC wine is mainly blended from three different grape varieties – Sémillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle. It is an unusual semi–sweet (moelleux) white wine, extremely elegant, supple and round with a very pale straw colour. It is defined by its very specific ‘terroir’ of exposed hillsides north of the Dordogne Valley.

Saussignac AOC
White wines
An exceptional sweet wine, Saussignac whites are derived from an assemblage of Sémillon, Sauvignon, Muscadelle, Ondec and Chenin Blancnoble grapes, cultivated with noble rot and picked by several times during harvest. Go meet its winemakers to discover the concentration and complexity enhanced by a beautiful freshness. It is a rich, full wine whose aroma of acacia, peach and honeysuckle develops over time into a generous, complex bouquet that also improves with age.
